1971 s proof Eisenhower Silver Dollar Peg leg variety Certified by NGC What “Peg Leg R” Means (aka FS-401 variety)
The “Peg Leg R” variety (also called FS-401 or “Fading Peg Leg”) refers to a die variety on the 1971-S Proof Eisenhower Silver Dollar where the “R” in LIBERTY has a missing or weak lower serif (making the back leg of the R appear like a “peg leg”).
It also typically involves some weakness or fading on other letters (e.g. parts of the “E” in LIBERTY) depending on how far the die has worn.
Rarity / Population
According to CoinWeek, approximately 100,000-150,000 of these “Peg Leg” variety proofs may have been struck. However, only five have been certified by NGC with the variety.
Many more are certified by PCGS; the PCGS population for this variety is much higher.
